Pyrite and white iron ore, which are minerals of [homogeneous anomalies], can be formed as long as sulfur and iron are combined, regardless of inorganic origin or organic origin. These two kinds of ores are easy to grow in hot places of volcanic activity such as hydrothermal deposits or exhalation deposits, and their occurrence is very similar, but the crystallization is quite different. Among them, white iron ore has cleavage in two directions, and the vast majority is difficult to identify with the naked eye.

Pyrite is formed in high-temperature acidic environment, while white iron ore is formed in low-temperature alkaline environment, and the temperature is less than 450 ℃. However, the two sometimes coexist.

Pyrite is one of the minerals used as flint by ancient people. For example, the 15th century invention of the [Wheelock], the hammer part of this flint gun is pyrite.

The copper color of pyrite is very deep and thick, which is not easy to distinguish from nature. Therefore, it is commonly known as [fool's gold], which means [fool's gold].

Although the color of white iron ore is lighter than that of pyrite, it will react with the moisture in the air after a period of time, making the surface produce a layer of ferrous sulfate film and turn black. The production rate of this reaction is faster than that of pyrite, and it will decompose into fragments due to the production of sulfuric acid.

These two minerals were considered to be the same in the past, and borrowed the word [marcasita] in Arabic, and then evolved into [Marcasite]. In 1845, Wilhelm Haidinger, an Austrian mineralogist, found that the two minerals were different. At that time, he said that the name [Marcasite] was reserved for minerals belonging to the orthorhombic system, and was pronounced specifically in English.

On the contrary, it was James Dwight Dana, an American mineralogist, who turned the remaining equiaxed minerals into [pyrite]. In 1868, he changed the name of "flints" in Latin to "pyrete" and used it to call this kind of ore.

It's a long story. The gem known as Marcasite in the jewelry industry today is actually pyrite. They used the name used before the formal decision of the mineral name, that is, following the middle of the 18th century, small pyrite crystals were even cut into rose shapes to replace expensive diamonds.

The more familiar pyrite crystal is usually produced in the hexagonal form of a cube. When the crystal surface contacts with air, it will produce a thin film, which can fully see why this ore is called "fool's gold". Pentahedron is common in pyrite, which can almost be called [pyrite face], and there is not much crystal output of octahedron.
